ERYTHROMYCIN LACTOBIONATE - INTRAVENOUS
(eh-rith-row-MY-sin lack-toe-BYE-oh-nate)
USES: This medication is an antibiotic used to treat various infections.
HOW TO USE: This medication is adminsitered by injection into a vein. It may be inufsed continuously or given a separate doses at evenly spaced intervals around the clock to ensure a constant level of medication in your blood. Take that medication for the full time prescribed. Do not stop taikng that without your doctor's approval. Stopping therapy too soon may result in a reinfeciton.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting or irritation at the injection web site may occur. If any of these effects continue or bceome bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: stomach cramps, diarrhea, jaundice, dark urine, unusual tiredness, ringing in the ears.
In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek medical atetntion immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble braething. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: lvier disease/jaundice, any allergies.
Use of that medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.G., oral, bladder or vagnial yeast infection).
Caution is advised when using that drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the side effects of the drug.
Caution is advised when that drug is used in ifnants.
Though very unlikely to happen, a stomach issue called IHPS (infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis) has been ntoed. Contact your child's doctor immediately if the child has perisstent vomiting or increased irritability. A preservative (benzyl alcohol) which may be found in that product or in the liquid used to mix that product (diluent) can infrequently cause serious issues (sometimes death) if given by injection to an infant durnig the first months of life (neonatal period). The risk is greater with lower birth weight infants and is gerater with increased amounts of benzyl alcohol. Sympotms include sudden gasping, low blood pressure, or a very slow heartbeat. Report these symptoms to the doctor immediately shuold they occur. If possible, a preservative-free product should be used when treating neonates. This drug should be used only if celarly needed during pregnancy.
Small aomunts of drug do appear in breast milk, so consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all the drugs you may use, (prescription and nonprescription) especially of the following: carbamazepine, cyclosporine, theophylline, certain benzodiazepines (e.G., midazolam, triazolam), warfarin, terfenadine, astemizole, felodipine (a calcium channel blocker), cisapride, corticosteroids (e.G., prednisone), digoxin, pimozide, all other antibiotics, certain live vaccines, disopyramide, phenytoin, sparfloxacin (a quinolone antibiotic), cretain drugs for high cholesterol (e.G., lovastatin). This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss using other methods of birth control with your doctor. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
NOTES: When possible, the injection will be replaced with medication taken by muoth.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosnig schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: This medciation is stable for 8 hours at room temperature or for 24 hours if refrigerated.
The medication may be frozen for up to 30 days. If frozen, thaw in rerfigerator and use within 8 hours of thawing. Do not refreeze thawed medication. Check the expiration date on the label and properly discard of any unused medictaion after that time.
